CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Mountains On Swartz

Rick opened his eyes into total darkness. He fought against the claustrophobia and could hardly breath. “Rocky, are you all right?” He choked out the words.

“Rocky fine. Rocky in black rock.”

“Can you see?”

“Oh, yes. Rocky see splendid.”

“Great,” Rick mumbled. He touched his suit light and slowly his eyes became adjusted. He realized he could only see for a few feet in front of him. The rest was blackness. “Rocky, I need more light.”

“More light? Rocky needs to think about that.” Rocky lifted his hands, and suddenly a huge light appeared from each hand. The brightness filled the enormous chamber.

“How’re you doing that?” Rick asked in surprise.

“Some stone when placed together make bright light. Other rocks glow alone.”

Rick looked around him. “This cave is monstrous. It is stable?”

“Not change for many centuries. Very stable.”

“Can you locate glowing rocks in the ceiling around this place? The KutAlls need light to see, but not as bright as I need.”

“Rocky can do.”

“Good. I’m going to flash back to Drow and move the cylinder.” Rick patted Rocky’s arm. “This is good. Are you having fun doing good deeds?”

“Rocky love to be needed. To make people happy.”

“I’m proud of you, Rocky.”

“Rocky very proud of Master Rick.”

Rick laughed. “You’ve been taking diplomatic lessons from Clip I see.”

“Rocky another smart cookie on Master Rick’s team!”

Rick laughed as he said, “Yes, you are. Be right back.”

Rick flashed away.

Earl jumped when Rick flashed back. “We’re going to have to devise a warning system when you drop in. I almost had to restart my pacemaker.”

“Nice try, but I know you don’t have a pacemaker.”

The Master Kline flowed to him. “My people are worried.”

“Well, so am I. Do you have any ground connections from the Cylinder to the cave?”

“Unhooked, all have been.”

“Then it’s showtime.”

“Not understand showtime?” The Master Kline sang with a frown.

“Where’s Melody when you need her, huh?” Rick said. He pointed at a large “H” shaped beam. “Is this connected to the main part of your Cylinder?”

“Yes,” the Master Kline sang.

“Have you tied down everything?”

“As much as time allowed.”

Rick said, “Outside are six travelers. They will help me relocate this thing. They’ve never moved an object as large as this, so all I can tell you is that we will try. If it doesn’t work, then I’ll have to take your people in groups.”

“Understand—”the Master Kline started to sing, but stopped when the earth shook violently.

Rick closed his eyes and thought to the Travelers, “The cave is coming down. We must do it NOW!”

The cave imploded in a huge roar of earth as boulders came crashing against the Cylinder. Then there was only stillness.

Rick heard a loud knocking at Door 17 of the KutAll’s Cylinder. The Master Kline switched on a viewer and a KutAll standing behind the Master Kline screamed a high “C” note in shock at the sight of Rocky.

Rick laughed and asked, “Can Rocky hear me?”

“Yes,” the Master Kline sang. “Speak now.”

“Rocky, are you all right?”

“Rocky wonder about you. Are you all right?”

“We’ll be right out.
